The first Ranger unit, known as the 1st Ranger Battalion, was formed in 1942 and trained at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. The unit quickly saw action in North Africa and Europe, where they conducted raids and reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines.
After the war, the Ranger units were deactivated, but were reactivated in 1950 for the Korean War. In the following decades, Ranger units were frequently deployed to Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and other locations around the world.
In 1974, the Ranger Training Command was established at Fort Benning, Georgia, to standardize and improve Ranger training. Today, all soldiers hoping to become Rangers must complete the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) at Fort Benning, which includes a grueling physical and mental assessment followed by a 62-day Ranger training course.
Ranger training focuses on small unit tactics, leadership, and physical fitness, and is widely considered to be one of the most challenging training programs in the US military.
