The prime minister stressed new measures were different than in March, as schools, universities and nurseries would remain open. In the latest U-turn the chancellor Rishi Sunak extended the Covid job furlough scheme until March 2021 as the second coronavirus wave and renewed lockdown measures threaten to drive up unemployment.
