BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS | Tour of Blackpool Lights at night
We head from Blackpool Tower down the golden mile and towards central pier on the seafront and beach area to check out the beautiful lights and illuminations.
Blackpool Illuminations is a renowned and long-standing light festival held in the coastal town of Blackpool, located in Lancashire, England. This annual event has a fascinating history dating back to 1879 when it was first introduced as a celebration during actress Sarah Bernhardt's visit to the town.
The festival typically runs from late August to early November, spanning several weeks, and draws in millions of visitors. Its main attraction is the stunning display of lights and illuminated features that adorn Blackpool's famous Promenade, a scenic coastal road along the seafront. These lights encompass a wide range of themes and designs, from traditional to contemporary, and often feature popular characters and cultural references.
The official opening of the event is marked by a grand switch-on ceremony, which is a highlight for attendees. Celebrity guests are often invited to participate in this ceremony, adding to the excitement.
One of the unique aspects of Blackpool Illuminations is the inclusion of illuminated trams and vehicles. These trams, fitted with thousands of light bulbs, provide visitors with a special way to experience the illuminations by taking a ride along the Promenade. Additionally, illuminated cars and buses contribute to the festival's charm.
Visitors can enjoy the illuminations for free by strolling or driving along the Promenade. Alongside the light displays, there are various stalls, food vendors, souvenir shops, and entertainment options, creating a festive atmosphere for all ages.
Beyond being a visual spectacle, Blackpool Illuminations play a significant role in the local economy by attracting tourists and supporting businesses in the area. The event also fosters community involvement, with local schools and organizations often participating in creating some of the illuminated displays. This sense of community engagement enhances the overall appeal of the festival.
In essence, Blackpool Illuminations are a cherished tradition that brings wonder and joy to Blackpool and continues to be a beloved event for residents and visitors, marking the transition from summer to autumn in a captivating way.
