This is an updated tutorial on How to Complete the W-8BEN Form for YouTube. If you earn any income from YouTube it is considered US-income. There are several ways to earn money on YouTube. The W-8BEN form is a United States legal tax form from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) which is also referred to as the “Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding”.
This IRS form allows non-US residents to claim tax treaty benefits like a zero US tax rate or a reduced tax rate. If you are an individual, you should complete the W-8BEN form; and if you are a business entity, you should complete the W-8BEN-E form.
For YouTube, you need to log into your Google AdSense account to complete and submit the form. How you complete the W-8BEN form will depend on several factors like: your country of permanent residence; if your country has a tax treaty with the United States; and the type of US-income you’re earning.
The type of US-income will determine which article you use and the corresponding US tax rate. In this tutorial, I’m completing the W-8BEN form as a Canadian based in Canada. And for the type of US-income is the YouTube Partner Program (via Google AdSense) and Other Copyright Royalties.
If your country of residence doesn’t have a tax treaty with the US, you would leave Part II (for tax treaty benefits) of the form blank. This means that any US-income you earn from YouTube will be subject to up to 30% in US tax withholding. You can check the link below for a list of US tax treaty documents from the official IRS website. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments sections.
