Nako is a small village in Kinnaur at an altitude of 3600 meters. After a basic but satisfying breakfast we set out exploring this little oasis in the middle of a post apocalyptic world.
The maze of stone houses are surrounded by mud walkways. They are wide enough for two people, anything wider and someone will have to backtrack. Almost all houses have cow sheds attached. These did not have a roof when we visited but I am sure they would get patched up in winter.
After a few wrong turns, we eventually made it to Nako lake. It is beautiful and makes for great photography. It is clear that the last few years have seen a frenzy of development to meet the demand of travellers. Behind the lake, you'll see a huge prayer wheel on top of a hill. I walked up the rocky trail for a rewarding view of Nako village and the Himalayas towering over the desert landscape.
Once down, I joined Jay and Swapna and we continued exploring more alleys, finding wood paintings, peeping into more houses, but not meeting many people. We probably met 5-6 in the entire village.
