This is a video showing the best catches of center fielder Fred Lynn as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
It is mainly from the Red Sox highlight films of those years (1975-1980), with the '75 World Series clips from Major League Baseball's posts of those games.
His excellent hitting aside, what a pleasure to watch Freddy Lynn tracking down balls for the Sox in the mid-to-late 1970s. He began in his Rookie of the Year/Most Valuable Player 1975 season and didn't stop until being traded in 1981. (I know, he made lots of fine grabs after that ... but not for the Sox!).
Graceful, fearless, and a good guy to boot, he was one of my favorites on those Boston teams that had so many outstanding players.
Notes: I'd rank them 1) Bringing back homer vs. Twins in '77; 2) Running grab in 9th inning of G4 vs. Reds in '75 Series; 3) Diving, backward somersaulting gem vs. Yankees at Shea in '75 ... If I've missed one, let me know ... Just noticed on the Shea catch, there was the shadow (and noise) of a plane landing at LaGuardia he might have seen, and he maintained possession even with fellow Gold Dust Twin Jim Rice leaping over him. Incredible ... Joe Garagiola said it was a bad break on the first catch in G2 of the '75 Series, but if I recall correctly the field was a quagmire. He quite possibly slipped like he did on the second catch but still had the speed to get there ... Just one catch from 1978? Fred wasn't slacking off - the highlight film from that year concentrated on the playoff game ... Oh yeah, No. 19 had a strong arm, too. There was no prettier relay than Lynn (cannon) to Rick Burleson (rocket) to Carlton Fisk (sweep tag).
