Three demonstrators and two policemen were injured Wednesday
(19/7) in southern Lebanon as several thousand workers joined a
24-hour nationwide strike called to protest against tax increases.
The General Labour Union called the strike to protest against tax
increases on many items -- including gasoline and luxury goods --
imposed to cover the cost of public-sector pay inceases awarded
earlier this month. In the southern port city of Sidon, three
demonstrators were injured and taken to the hospital when soldiers
fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Demonstrators
retaliated by throwing stones, injuring two policemen and damaging
their jeep. In Beirut, soldiers blocked roads leading to the
Government Palace as more than 600 protesters, including trade
unionists, opposition members of the National Assembly and
followers of the Iran-backed Hezbollah (Party of God) movement,
gathered in the city centre. Meanwhile, Israeli President Ezer
Weizman visited Israel's
occupation zone in south Lebanon.
