On December 5, 1945, a squadron of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers, known as Flight 19, disappeared over the Atlantic after departing from the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a routine training mission. Led by Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, the flight was meant to execute a series of bombing exercises before returning to base, a straightforward task for the experienced crew. However, shortly into the flight, Taylor reported malfunctioning compasses and disorientation, believing they had drifted off course.

The weather conditions deteriorated, and communication between Flight 19 and the base became increasingly erratic.
