Supreme Court lays down 8 factors for deciding alimony amid Bengaluru Techie Suicide. This came during the divorce proceedings of Praveen Kumar Jain and Anju Jain. Bench of Justice Vikram and Justice Prasanna presided over the case, and ordered Praveen to pay an alimony of Rs 5 crore
The bench laid down an eight-point formula to decide the amount as maintenance for the woman after divorce
- The social and economic status of the husband and wife
- The basic needs of the wife and children in the future
- Qualification and employment of both parties
- Sources of income and assets
- The standard of living of the wife while living at her in-laws house
- The employment status of the wife
- A reasonable amount for a legal battle for a wife who is not working
- What will be the financial status of the husband, his earnings and other responsibilities along with the maintenance allowance
This comes amid the outrage following the suicide of a Bengaluru techie named Atul Subhash. He alleged years-long emotional distress over marital issues He had multiple cases filed against him and faced harassment from his wife, her relatives, as well as a judge in UP. A placard reading 'Justice is due' was found in the room where he allegedly ended his life
