c/o Ruf: For as long as he can remember, Eddie 9V has had a crush on Capricorn Studios. For the boy who studied the sleeves of his favorite vinyl records, this legendary Macon, Georgia studio has always been a secret ingredient, adding a little dirt and honey that arose on its floor. Capricorn and the bands that recorded there made the Atlanta guitarist drop out of school at 15, play his fingers bloody all over the South, and out of indifference to his early albums Left My Soul in Memphis (2019) and Little Black Flies (2021) to be applauded.
Eddie spent the first 25 years of his life admiring Capricorn from afar. But in December 2021, the 26-year-old finally put his stamp on the studio's myth when he assembled an 11-strong group of the best roots musicians in the American South to record his third album. "It was pretty darn exciting to be in such a legendary studio," he says. “But we hugged and went straight to work. Everyone was happy, loving and kicked ass.”
You don't come to Capricorn Studios if you want a smooth production. Frozen in time since it opened in 1969, the spirit of the sessions of giants like the Allman Brothers still hangs in the air, while the recording philosophy has remained grandiosely unpolished. That suited Eddie, whose output has been hailed for being an unvarnished snapshot. "In a world where everyone wants to sound their best, I want to sound like me". he muses. "I always want the audience to feel like they're in a room with us. So if a drum pedal squeaked or someone laughed at a take of the Capricorn album, I left it in. It's our way of putting our stamp on a song.”
