The Austin office of Norton Rose Fulbright houses a team of especially civic-focused lawyers who work with organizations like the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) and American Gateways, which provides culturally sensitive immigration legal services. In November 2018, two of the Norton Rose Fulbright Austin lawyers, Adam Schramek and Ryan Meltzer, were recognized at TCRP’s Bill of Rights Dinner and received the 2018 Kristi Couvillon Pro Bono Award for helping expose the Texas Workforce Commission’s noncompliance with the National Voter Registration Act. As a result of their uncovering this problem at the TWC, the state began offering voter registration services to more than 100,000 people with disabilities who hadn’t received these services previously - even though they should have been offered such services under federal law. Another one of our young lawyers, Taylor Mauze, did what litigators do best and acted as a committed, passionate advocate for two gay women from Ghana who sought asylum to escape sexual abuse and physical violence in their homeland. This associate provided pro bono representation for her Ghanaian clients through American Gateway’s Legal Advocacy for Immigrant Survivors program, and her work has been justly celebrated.
