In March 2023, Russia revealed that it would complete the modernisation of its missile defence systems by the end of 2023. Russia began prioritising its aerospace defence capabilities in 2020, when the Kremlin announced its State Armament Program. The program is reportedly intended to result in the deployment of 800 S-400, S-350, and S-500 missile launchers in 100 battalions. Under this program, known as GPV-2027 in Russia, Moscow aims to complete the production of the new S-500 system. Moscow claims that the new systems can easily take down American fifth-generation fighter jets F-22s and F-35s. However, very little is known about the S-500’s true combat capability.
