Japan’s history of having dogs goes as far back as its history of having people, having first been brought to the island with the native Jomon peoples. Overtime they were bred for hunting in mountainous regions and even became the companions of samurai. Today we will talk about the history of the 6 native Japanese dog breeds: The Akita Inu, the Shiba Inu, the Kishu, Kai, Shikoku and Hokkaido, the near extinction of these breeds during the 19th century and the efforts of breeders in beginning of the 20th century to revive these breeds culminating in the establishment of the Nihon Ken Hozonkai or NIPPO (The Association for the Preservation of the Japanese Dogs) in 1928.
