Here Socrates takes up the question of justice with Glaucon and Adeimantus, two young philosophers eager to find satisfying answers to their questions. Glaucon frames the question, "Is justice good?" by distinguishing three senses in which any act could be called good. We then hear the story of the Ring of Gyges which shows the "many's" view of justice. This ultimately will be contrasted with Socrates's view considered in the following lecture.
