A shroud of mystery has long surrounded Pablo Picasso’s influences for his revolutionary cubism style. Some art historians have pointed to African masks while others have been uneasy about making a definitive conclusion. Without strong evidence in any direction, Picasso has stood center stage as the most profound artistic genius of all time.
Author Bernie Taylor has explored this question of Picasso’s artistic inspiration from a different perspective and proposes that Picasso was indeed a genius although not for any cubist revelation. Taylor offers that Picasso’s genius was for his recognizing and transferring an artistic style, animistic metaphors and identical characters from Upper Paleolithic cave art into some of his most famous works such as Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica. Taylor’s research suggests that cave art from more than 30,000 years ago was not just an early leap in the evolution of artistic creativity, but also directly launched modern art though the brush strokes of Picasso. Join Taylor on this artistic journey of rediscovery where we will look through both the Upper Paleolithic record and works of Picasso to decide for ourselves what is modern art.
