As part of Firelight Media's recent #BeyondResilience event, "QTBIPOC Representation in Documentary," Firelight Media-supported filmmaker Ligaiya Romero ('Maia Cruz Palileo: Becoming the Moon') sat down with D. Smith, director of the acclaimed documentary 'Kokomo City,' to discuss her filmmaking process. 'Kokomo City' premieres in theaters July 28, 2023 through Magnolia Pictures.
D. Smith is a two-time Grammy-nominated songwriter-producer who produced and is featured on "Shoot Me Down" from Lil Wayne's 8x platinum album Tha Carter III and wrote and produced the No. 1 Billboard dance single "Love Yourself" by Billy Porter. She made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show. 'Kokomo City' is D. Smith's directorial feature film debut.
