STORYLINE:
Clashes broke out in the West Bank village of Deir Samit on Tuesday when Israeli construction crews uprooted several Palestinian-owned olive groves to make way for a controversial separation barrier.
The violence erupted as bulldozers moved into Palestinian-owned olive groves and began uprooting trees and locals protested.
Israeli troops guarding the construction crews fired a volley of tear gas and sound bombs into the crowd, forcing the protesters to flee into adjacent olive groves, witnesses said.
Four soldiers beat a protester, kicking and punching him in the stomach, then dragging him away.
The protester was apparently trying to stop a bulldozer from clearing land.
Military sources said the army used tear gas to clear the disturbance, but had no information on injuries.
Israel insists the barrier, snaking its way through the West Bank, will prevent attackers getting into Israel and is vital for the security of the country.
Palestinians say the structure represents nothing more than a land grab.
Also on Tuesday, thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank town of Jenin attended the funerals of the three militants, including a local leader, killed by an Israeli helicopter missile on Monday.
The three were allegedly members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent group linked to Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.
The Israeli military said the three had been involved in attacks on Israelis.
Meanwhile in a newspaper interview, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon threatened to expel Yasser Arafat "at a convenient time."
Israel says Arafat has encouraged and at times financed attacks on Israel.
In response, Palestinian Cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said he believed Sharon's threats were part of an agenda for Israel to exit the peace process.
