The high drug usage in the Humansdorp and surrounding areas of the Eastern Cape has prompted the Department of Social Development to mark International Day against drug abuse in this area. A report by the South African Medical Research Council's shows that 11% of the South African population (5.7 million people) suffer from an addiction disorder in their life. The theme for 2018's campaign, which coincides with Drug Awareness Week is 'Drug Control'. It aims to inspire people and mobilise support for the curbing of the supply of drugs in communities.
