“Iran basically wanted to pacify its internal pressure from the people, that the same time Iran struck in Syria in Iraq and Pakistan it wanted to give a strong message to its people that it is capable to protect our.. to take revenge, so this is one of the reasons that Iran actually did this.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdullah Khan, an analyst at the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies:
“What the initial response came from Iran, shows that Iran may not again do any kind of kinetic operation inside Pakistan but we cannot rule out anything. Something else can happen and you know this can escalate too. One cannot rule out escalation one cannot rule out diffusion as well, both the possibilities are there but all that depends basically on Iranian response, how they will respond to what Pakistan did earlier today.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdullah Khan, an analyst at the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies:
“The issue of Houthis who are attacking all the transportations in the Red Sea towards Israel and they're flexing muscle, they also fired some missiles on Israel as well as they have attacked some ships and one of the ships was bound to Pakistan, so there were rumours that Pakistan has joined the American coalition against the Houthis which was untrue. Perhaps the Iranians also wanted to give Pakistan a message that if you will join a coalition - American the western coalition - against the Houthis then you may have problems.”

“This is very unfortunate that Iran unfortunately doesn't enjoy cordial relationship with most of its neighbours whether it's Pakistan right or it is at the lowest level in many decades the Pakistan Iran relations.”

“Apparently Iran was supporting Hamas and interestingly it's public stature in Muslim world was going up but suddenly I don't know why they shot in the foot that suddenly they attacked three Muslim countries, and its rating is going down.”

STORYLINE:
An analyst said Thursday that Iran may have attacked Pakistan on Tuesday because it thought Pakistan had joined the American coalition against the Houthis.
Abdullah Khan, from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, said one of the ships attacked by the Iranian-supported Houthis was bound for Pakistan.
"There were rumours that Pakistan has joined the American coalition against the Houthis which was untrue. Perhaps the Iranians also wanted to give Pakistan a message that if you will join a coalition American, the Western coalition against the Houthis then you may have problems,” he suggested.
Pakistan’s air force, Thursday, launched retaliatory airstrikes in Iran allegedly targeting militant positions.
The attack killed at least nine people and further raised tensions between the neighboring nations.
Khan added that Iran was motivated by a need to show its people that it was capable of protecting them.
