Join us for the Virtual Science Cafe! We'll hear from Dr. Stephany Taylor, assistant professor of physics at Shaw University.
Dr. Taylor's research utilizes US landfalling hurricane tracks to help coordinate better evacuation plans and damage assessments for landfalling hurricanes in the US along the east coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasting the track of hurricanes has improved significantly in the past few decades. However, forecasting the intensity of hurricanes has not been as successful. Based on the approaching angle, landfalling hurricanes are categorized and each category will be assigned an average damage assessment based on precipitation totals, sustained wind speeds, monetary damages and casualties.
