With the graduation of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital’s 2016 class of the general surgery residents, the hospital celebrates 100 years of surgical education and surgical excellence. The general surgery residency program began under the leadership of J.M.T. Finney Sr., MD, in 1916 and still follows the principals he learned from his mentor, William S. Halsted, MD, at Johns Hopkins Hospital over a century ago. MedStar Union Memorial’s community-based, academic surgical training program remains one of the oldest independent residency programs in the country,
Dr. Finney’s commitment to providing the highest quality of patient care continues today under the leadership of Richard F. Heitmiller, MD, with the surgeons and residents who practice and train at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. The Department of Surgery directs one of the four residency programs at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In 2014, ACGME granted an expansion of the residency program from two to three categorical residents each year. The residents graduate with more than 1,000 cases and at least 300 major cases in their chief resident year.
