We were invited by Mazda Canada to experience the new 2021 Mazda3 GT with the SkyActiv-G Turbo engine, part of their First Drive event. This 2021 Mazda3 GT AWD comes with the premium package along with the turbo engine, producing 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. We go over the changes for the 2021 model year compared with the 2019 we drove, including the price increases across all trims, the features that trickled down to adjust for the price, and the new features found like traffic jam assist, a 360º HD camera system, and forward parking sensors.
We also go over the ways Mazda has engineered this car to perform to it's fullest potential, methods of fitting the turbo engine into the car, and how the software, chassis, and steering have all been tuned in order to accommodate this new engine. We go over some of the background on this car provided to us by Mazda to better explain the changes and updates, and why you'd want to consider this car.
We then take this 2021 Mazda3 GT AWD Turbo on a comprehensive road test through the winding, twisting roads of the Lauentied region of Québec, including Saint-Jérome, Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs, & Val-David. We report our fuel economy numbers on our 100km test loop and how they compare to the FWD Mazda3 GT, along with our impressions of the new traffic jam assist feature. We include some POV shots of our drive along with the way the car handles, drives, and performs both in manual shift mode and Sport mode.
We also conduct 0-100km (0-60mph) launch tests to see how the turbo AWD performs, along with our final thoughts on why you'll want to consider this car over some of the competition Mazda is targeting, like the Acura ILX, Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, or BMW 2 Series.
