Many people are unaware that LED's have the ability to produce voltage and a very small current when exposed to sunlight(especially direct sunlight). Some LED's perform better than others. Red LED's work well, but Infrared LED's work much better, as well as UV LED's. The output current is small, but still enough to be useful in triggering a circuit which uses a very sensitive gate thyristor as show in this video.
