Recent research has updated our understanding of Stonehenge’s history. Thousands of years before the monument was built, the area was not a dense forest as once thought, but open meadows and woodland, teeming with wildlife and hunter-gatherers. Around 5500 BC, these early inhabitants lived there until farmers and monument builders arrived, eventually constructing Stonehenge. But questions remain: What was it built for, and why?
