Whenever we experience heavy rain, we end up with raw sewage overflowing into the Grand Canal basin, as well as 42 other river, lake and sea locations around the country. This is thanks to the lack of wastewater processing facilities in Ireland.
The European Commission had issued repeated warnings that failure to deal with our waste water correctly would result in substantial fines. This warning has been ignored by the Government and now the Irish State faces fines of hundreds of millions of Euro.
Eamon Ryan has called on the Government to rectify this situation rapidly to avoid further penalties by making vital investment in our water infrastructure now while Senator Grace O'Sullivan - Waterford, who is a member of the Oireachtas Water Committee says that a consistent funding stream for investment in water infrastructure is urgently required.
