Produced by the Texas Education Agency, “Gone to Texas” (1978) is an educational film that portrays a man telling the story of early Texas to his two children as they ride horses along the Brazos River. In this segment, the narrator, played by Texas actor Guich Koock, tells the story of Moses Austin and the first American settlers of Texas. To illustrate, the film combines shots of the landscape around the Brazos River with reenactments of historical events. The narrator explains to his children that the American settlers were intrigued by Texas for its pristine and cheap land after the economic depression of 1819 in the United States. The Spanish government leaders of San Antonio, though hesitant at first, allowed the settling of Texas by Anglo Americans to try to grow the Texas economy as well as add protection from the Native Americans who also called Texas home. Although Moses Austin passed away on his journey to Missouri to recruit settlers, the offer still stood.
