(20 Mar 2021) Thousands brought in the Kurdish new year on Saturday with fires, colorful outfits and dancing in Sulaimaniyah, northern Iraq.
Roshna Awat, a local resident enjoying the Nowruz festivities wearing intricate traditional clothes, said she hoped the new year would bring an end to the coronavirus pandemic and other crises facing the Kurdish-run region.
Another resident, Mirza Mahmoud, noted a marked difference between this year and 2020's more muted celebrations.
"We couldn't celebrate last year because of quarantine and the coronavirus," he said, adding that this time round, people were "out with great joy and pleasure to celebrate Nowruz."
Millions of Kurds mark the occasion on March 21, around the first day of spring.
It symbolizes the passing of the dark season, and the arrival of the season of light.
