Astilbes are one of my favorite shade plants. Yes, some can tolerate sun but they can get bleached and I like the rich dark color of their leaves when they’re in the shade. They are pollinators and native plants in many areas, and they prefer rich, moist soil.
Unlike a lot of other perennials (the ones that come back every year), these can be a little tricky to divide. I’ve rammed my shovel in and split the dirt but not the roots, which is why I suggested taking a little more care than most others I deal with. When? Literally ANY time. This was filmed in late July.
Who’s with me on this wonderful plant?
