Drug manufacturer Johnson & Johnson and three distributors have agreed to pay $26bn to resolve thousands of claims over their role in the US opioid epidemic.
State and local governments brought the lawsuits which accused the companies of helping drive a nationwide deadly opioid epidemic.
US pharmaceutical distributors, McKesson Corp, Cardinal Health Inc and AmerisourceBergen Corp, are to pay a total of $21bn; while Johnson & Johnson is expected to pay $5bn.
The crisis has taken about half a million US residents' lives.
