Professor Johannes Menke returns to the show to discuss his new book, "François Couperin und seine Zeit." François Couperin's "le Grand" experienced a cultural change that Paul Hazard described as a "crisis of European consciousness," and he responded to this as a musician, educator, and composer: While the beginning of his career was dominated by the classical era of the Sun King, the second half of his life was shaped by the galant culture and the beginning of the Enlightenment in the time of the Regency and Louis XV. The focus of this book is his multifaceted and fascinating music, interpreted in new ways in the context of their culture. As a poet of instrumental music and master of nuances, Couperin is a forerunner of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, who rightly admired their predecessor.
