NUMBER ONE: Dedicated
Doreen Delceita Lawrence was born on the 24th October, 1952 in Spanish Town, Jamaica a British Colony. After her family moved to Brockley, South London in order to give their daughter a decent level of education, it was her parents, who instilled in her an interest in politics and the need for equality at a young age. At the age of 17, Doreen finished her education in South-East London and began working in a bank as a trainee.# The same year she married Neville Lawrence, who was also a Jamaican migrant who moved to England. The couple had 3 children, leaving Doreen having to balance work, taking care of her children and studying for her undergraduate degree in Humanities, which she would later complete, a very impressive achievement considering the commitments she had during this period. Doreen Lawrence’s life changed forever on the evening of the 22nd of April, 1993. During the early 90s, white youth gang culture had risen in London, which is infamous for racially motivated attacks. This is what many UK Minorities were facing regularly.
NUMBER TWO: Humble
Human rights activist and cultural pioneer, Nelson Mandela really did use his influence in every corner of the world, seeking to eradicate racial prejudice and oppression. Nelson Mandela met the Lawrence family in May, 1993 in South London, two weeks after the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Sadly for Stephen, as far as the police were concerned, he was just another black boy in the on-going crisis of sense-less racial attacks, and so meeting Mandela was what attracted media attention and created headlines for justice. Doreen Lawrence is adamant that meeting Mandela, this international statesman, was the trigger for the police’s actions. Without him making a statement, after they had both met, the arrests would never have been made. In 1998, she set up the ‘Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust’, which does vital work to support young people in their schools and communities, helping them to overcome disadvantage and discrimination.
NUMBER THREE: Optimistic
Despite having to go through the traumatic experience of losing her son Stephen, Doreen maintained a positive outlook on the world and has made some remarkable contributions to various communities for many years. She held the Olympic flag during the London 2012 opening ceremony of the games, received a lifetime achievement award at the 14th annual Pride of Britain Awards, whilst also becoming a patron of ‘Stop Hate UK’, and was appointed as both a board and council member of human rights organisation ‘Liberty’.
NUMBER FOUR: Truthful
To mark the 25th anniversary of Stephen’s murder, the BBC ran a three-part documentary, ‘The Murder that Changed a Nation’. The series included contributions from leading police officers at the time, the prime minister, former home secretary ‘Jack Straw’, ‘Paul Dacre’, whose paper was published by the Daily Mail, famously pointing the finger at the five suspects. Doreen wasn’t involved in the production, and didn’t watch the series, because she simply couldn’t due to overwhelming emotions surrounding her son’s death.
NUMBER FIVE: Resilient
Many decades after Doreen’s son murder, we are wondering - is there a change? Are kids these days growing up in a society that is less racist than at the time of Stephen’s murder? Is the new wave of hate not through some physical violence, but through social media called ‘cancel culture’, to destroy one’s livelihood and social standing in an ever polarised world. However, young people are still feeling that they’re trapped, and being victimised by the police.
