(4 Dec 1976) About three thousand angry Greek Cypriot demonstrators tore through a police barricade and tried to storm the United States embassy in Nicosia on Monday(12 April '76) but riot police charging with batons and tear gas, drove them back.
A delegation of five men were allowed through to the embassy to present a petition of protest. However,a few minutes later the violence began.the demonstrators quickly surged through the first of the barbed wire barriers and then moved on to the second. As they attempted to tear apart the second and strongest barrier helmeted riot police moved in to stop the advance. Wielding batons and hurling teargas grenades,the police quickly scattered the crowd.
Protestors and police skirmished for hours into the night,with youths lighting fires and hurling rocks outside the embassy and police using more tear-gas to scatter them. The police said some protestors and a few policemen were injured in the clashes and nearby shop-windows were smashed.however, the target of the demonstration, the United States embassy, was untouched. The clash continued the worst wave of anti-American violence on Cyprus since August, 1974,when the United States Amabssador was shot dead
