The Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) is proud to announce the retirement of Helicopter 408 (H408), a historic aircraft that has served the department for over two decades. In its place, the department will introduce Helicopter 409 (H409), a brand new Bell 412 EPX.
H408, which first began its storied career in September 1968 during the Vietnam War, has played a vital role in the department’s operations. Originally assigned to the 117th Assault Helicopter Company, the Warlords, H408 went on to serve as an Army medevac helicopter stateside before being acquired by KCFD. The aircraft underwent an extensive $800,000 refurbishment, breathing new life into the aircraft, allowing it to serve the fire department for many years. Since its first use for active firefighting operations in July 2000, H408 has been an indispensable tool in saving lives and protecting the communities of Kern County. Now, after many years of service, the department bids farewell to H408 as it takes its rightful place in history.
H409, a modern replacement, boasts the latest in safety systems, higher payload capacity, and faster speed, providing the department with enhanced capabilities to meet the growing needs of the community. Just like its predecessor, H409 will be used for rescue operations and firefighting efforts, ensuring that Kern County remains prepared for any emergency.
“This moment marks an exciting chapter in the history of Kern County Air Operations,” said Kern County Fire Chief Aaron Duncan. “The retirement of Helicopter 408, which has served us so well, is bittersweet. However, we are thrilled to welcome Helicopter 409, a more capable and efficient aircraft that will allow us to continue our mission of saving lives and providing vital services to the community.”
