Umling La Pass | World's Highest Motorable Pass | Ladakh Solo Ride on Himalayan 450
Hey everyone, I'm Akash, a solo traveler from Jalandhar, Punjab, on an adventurous journey through Ladakh on my Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. Today, I took on one of the most challenging rides of my life to Umling La Pass, the world's highest motorable pass at an altitude of 19,024 feet (5,798 meters). This route is not for the faint-hearted and tested my endurance as a rider in every way possible.
Yesterday’s Journey
I started this epic ride from Hanle, which is at an altitude of 14,764 feet (4,500 meters). Riding through the breathtaking yet harsh terrain of Ladakh, I also crossed Photila Pass, the world's 6th highest motorable pass at 18,124 feet (5,525 meters). The changing weather, sudden temperature drops, and low oxygen levels made it extremely challenging.
The Umling La Experience
Reaching Umling La was surreal but physically demanding. I spent about 30 minutes at the top, taking in the stunning views and the sense of achievement. However, the thin air and extreme altitude posed health challenges. On the way back to Hanle, one of our fellow riders from the Philippines experienced acute mountain sickness due to low oxygen levels. Thankfully, we had an oxygen tank, which helped stabilize the situation.
Back to Hanle
We returned to Hanle around 5 PM after a tiring yet rewarding day. Even I felt the effects of high altitude and low oxygen but managed to recover with some rest and medicine. Tomorrow, I’ll continue this incredible journey to Tso Moriri Lake, another gem in the heart of Ladakh.
