Historically, gowns from this era would have been draped on the body. Every piece was custom fit and designed. But how was it done? And how can we manage draping on ourselves? I'm covering the process of draping and fitting an early 19th c gown both ways! Not only will this process help with draping this specific era, but should give insight into how to fit pre-made patterns or refit old bodices.
While the Regency era has a huge variety of gown styles, many of them come down to a basic beginning shape. There are even quite a few that retain this base under the fashionable fabric! The best part is, it's the simplest type of bodice to fit. And once you have this garment worked out, you can apply loads of different shapes on top to customize the style.

For @AbbyCox we went with a bib front style, while on me I show a full coverage bodice like a Spencer jacket would have. It's also easy to drape lighter fabric across in so many ways with gathers, pleats, and darts to shape around this base. If you have a mannequin, you can even take the "body block" and stuff it out to the correct shape and drape on there! This is a system I use for nearly all of my historic clothing. There's no reason to fuss with complex shapes until I know my base fits correctly!
So let's get patterning and get ready to make all of those dream garments from Bridgerton, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, or frankly any Jane Austen story ever!
