Opera North’s work in Hull currently includes the Opera North Singing School, an intensive community residency project which offers high quality singing, musicianship and expressive movement to children at Bude Park Primary School in Bransholme supported by the Hessle-based William Jackson Food Group, and Exchanging Notes at Winifred Holtby Academy, in partnership with the National Foundation for Youth Music.
In September 2015 Opera North will launch new branches of the Opera North Children’s Chorus and Opera North Youth Company in Hull, as sister ensembles to successful youth chorus programmes in Leeds, and there are plans for more Opera North performances in Hull following the success in 2013 of Olivier Award-nominated family opera The Firework Maker’s Daughter, which toured nationally following its world premiere at Hull Truck Theatre.
During the last 10 years Opera North and The University of Hull have enjoyed a strong and thriving relationship as two major institutions in the north of England working together to provide unique engagement experiences for students and alumni. The two organisations are now launching an official five year partnership from 2015 – 2020, bringing together a major academic institution and a professional arts organisation with a shared purpose to enhance cultural activity and support regeneration in Hull.
Part of the five year partnership involves Opera North’s commitment to the University to provide a chamber concert series in 2016/2017, professional masterclasses and workshops for music students.
