Tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated as Super Typhoon Odette/Rai made landfall in the Philippines.

According to Reuters and local media, Typhoon Lai, with a wind speed of 185 kilometers per hour, made landfall on Siargao Island, northeast of Mindanao, southern Philippines, at 1 PM local time.

The U.S. Typhoon Warning Center classified Rai as a 'super typhoon' as the maximum wind speed reached 259 km/h.

Disaster authorities issued a typhoon warning in preparation for Lai's landing and urged residents of coastal and low-lying villages along the path of the typhoon to prepare before it happened.
