STORYLINE:
Indonesia's tsunami-ravaged Aceh province is slowly rebuilding, but six months after the disaster many people are still living in shelters, surrounded by the ruins of their former homes.
On the outskirts of the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, a mosque still stands surrounded by rubble, cars and fishing boats tossed inland by the massive wave.
Indonesia was the worst hit of eleven countries affected by the tsunami.
More than 131-thousand people were killed, and half a (m) million left homeless. Human remains are still found daily among the ruins and coastal rivers.
An assessment of the damage released on Tuesday said the December 26 tsunami destroyed more than a third of the villages in Aceh province, along with more than two-thirds of the government buildings and thousands of kilometres (miles) of roadway.
It said 173,673 hectares (429,145 acres) of settlements, comprising 34.8 per cent of the villages hit by the tsunami were destroyed.
