The Goethe barometer consists of a glass sphere with stand that has a thin tube at the side which is attached at its bottom. The barometer is half filled with water, often water with an added dye to make it more visible. The side tube is open at the top, which allows atmospheric pressure to change the level of the liquid inside. If the pressure rises, the liquid is forced back into the sphere against the internal air pressure and the level of the liquid inside the tube drops: fair weather is to be expected. When the atmospheric pressure drops, the level in the tube rises and this predicts rain or storm.
