A group of experts sent to Mount Elgon to investigate the cause of Thursday’s floods and mudslides, which killed at least 40 people in Bududa district, have released their findings.
According to the team, while the immediate cause of the disaster was River Suume bursting its banks and subsequently causing mudslides, human activity was ultimately to blame for the failure of the natural environment to hold the river’s waters.
Fred Kizza, the team leader has warned that more lives will be lost in future disasters if the population in the area is not relocated:
