"Mad" Mike Hughes lived up to his nickname by rocketing himself toward space in homemade steam-powered rockets. Obsessed with proving whether Earth is flat or round, the daredevil limo driver spent over $20,000 building rockets in his quest. In 2018, Hughes propelled himself 1,875 feet into the sky above the Mojave Desert, earning himself a Guinness World Record. Tragically, the self-taught engineer's daring experiments proved fatal - he perished in 2020 after his parachute tore away during a rocket launch gone wrong.
