Britain must have a “consistent, durable and respectful” relationship with China, Sir Keir Starmer said after meeting President Xi for the first time.
Starmer said strong ties between the two countries were important for the “broader international community”.
The leaders met on the fringes of the G20 summit in Brazil. Starmer proposed a full bilateral meeting in the near future.
He also said he hoped that Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, would soon visit Beijing to improve economic links between the nations.
“I’m keen that my chancellor should meet with [Xi’s vice-premier He Lifeng] for the upcoming economic financial dialogue early next year to explore more investment projects and a more level playing field to help our businesses,” he said.
