Even though the virtual 2020 NFL Draft got off to a slow start, it was still successful, and therefore, the refreshing big event the sports world needed. In every aspect of life, sports included, it can feel boring because of the shortages of everything, so for sports fans, the 2020 NFL Draft was an event almost everyone was looking forward to in these weird times.
With the lack of content, I found myself watching the WNBA draft, which was highlighted by a heartfelt memorial to Gianna Bryant, Payton Chester, and Alyssa Altobelli. It was also cool seeing Sabrina Ionescu getting drafted #1 to New York, as someone who likes the league but doesn't find myself watching it that much.
The NFL Draft, however, is one of the most popular sporting events of the year, as it brings a sense of action into the offseason and displays the future of one of the world's biggest sports leagues. This year, that's even more of the case, as with less going on in the world, there was more impatience for the NFL Draft to finally come. Even though we lost out on seeing a huge draft party in Las Vegas, I expected the TV ratings to blow through the roof due to the enhanced levels of excitement.
With more focus on the television aspect of the draft, the analysis of the prospects was really good. I especially enjoyed when they mentioned that Andrew Thomas plays the drums, Derrick Brown had the nickname "Baby Barack" as a kid, Roger Goodell tipping the Dolphins' second pick, and Goodell doing the SKOL chant with the Vikings fans. It was entertaining, even though Todd McShay wasn't there because he unfortunately caught the coronavirus. Prayers up to him.
Also prayers up to the city of Las Vegas, who had an insane draft party set up involving gondolas and the draft stage in the Bellagio fountains, only for coronavirus to destroy everything. It's still happening in 2022, but still. Fuck you, coronavirus.
Third on the prayers up list is Aaron Rodgers, who had to sit back and watch as the Packers drafted Jordan Love, a quarterback, in the first round, surprising everyone. Especially Rodgers.
Days 2 and 3 may not have been as fun or action-packed as Day 1, but it was still fun. Most of the content came from everyone being surprised by the Philadelphia Eagles taking Jalen Hurts, which surprised just about everyone, especially Carson Wentz. There was also the Patriots taking kicker Justin Rohrwasser and the Dolphins taking long snapper Blake Ferguson. Now those picks were incredible.
Other than that, nothing really happened. Just teams filling needs. Which I am completely fine with.
