History:
Lake Shawnee Amusement Park was opened in 1926 for coal miners and their families as a summer vacation destination. Tragic deaths have occurred in the park dating back to the 1950's before its first closure in 1966.
The park sat abandoned until the 1980's when it was purchased and reopened for other recreational activities for a few years until a discovery was made. While excavating the land for mud bogging, artifacts were uncovered dating back to the 1700's!
These artifacts belonged to the Native American Shawnee Tribe. Not only did they find artifacts, they discovered a sacred burial ground where thousands of Shawnee were laid to rest.
If this wasn't enough, they then discovered that this land was also home to a family of English settlers in the late 1700's. Three young members of this family were attacked by the Shawnee and are also buried in a grave on this land in the exact location where they were attacked. This is where our investigation started.
There are many spirits that wander this property that seem to be connected to the tragic events that happened on the land.
The owners of this property have gone to great lengths to show respect to not only the Shawnee, but also to those who died tragically. This is a fascinating place with many monuments as well as the decaying remnants of the abandoned amusement park. It is open for day and nighttime tours where you can get an amazing detailed history of Lake Shawnee as well as the opportunity to pay your respects while exploring this extensive property.
