An international war crimes prosecutor, Stephen Rapp, has uncovered evidence of a state-run "machinery of death" in Syria, with mass graves exposing widespread torture and murder under Bashar al-Assad's regime. Rapp visited two significant mass grave sites: one near Damascus in Najha and another in Qutayfah. Rapp estimates over 100,000 people have been killed since 2013. Witness testimonies and satellite imagery reveal the scale of the atrocities, with large-scale digging for mass burials starting between 2012 and 2014 and continuing until 2022. In Qutayfah alone, at least 100,000 bodies are believed to be buried. The International Commission on Missing Persons has identified 66 potential mass grave sites in Syria, with over 157,000 people reported missing. Rapp compared the scale of the killings to the Nazis, stating that thousands of people were involved in this "system of killing." Despite widespread accusations, Assad denies any human rights violations committed by his government.
