Who doesn’t love a good badminton trick shot?
They are flashy, electric, and exciting. High risk - high reward.
Like eating a snack in the middle of a silent library. Everyone knows what you’re doing. Everyone is watching. But sometimes, just sometimes… it’s worth it.
In this video, I’m going to be reacting to the 10 most insane badminton trick shots played at the absolute highest level.
For those that are new here: I’m Justin Ma, a 7x US Junior National Badminton Champion, and a professional badminton player for the last 8 years.
Let’s dive right in:
First clip: The flexibility of Axelsen to bend all the way down and get this shot given how tall he is is really amazing and what makes him one of the best players of all time. It’s extremely rare to have his level of flexibility coupled with his height.
Just goes to show how much time and energy Axelsen invests to be at his peak physical fitness.
Second clip: This one is absolutely crazy given the pace of the rally and the game, but actually is a more common shot than you think. A lot of times, when the shuttle is around that area coming at a fast pace, you don’t actually have any choice but to hit in between the legs.
However, to see this done at the absolute peak of badminton is very amazing to see.
Third clip: The way he does these shots so casually is just peak badminton. Boonsak had some of the smoothest trick shots I’ve ever seen. You can definitely see how tired he gets by the end of the rally - LCW is on a different level.
This doesn’t discredit anything that Boonsak did during this rally though. Absolutely amazing!
Fourth clip: This is absolutely insane and probably will never happen again. Do you think this was all skill or pure luck?
Fifth clip: Definitely Peter Gade’s signature shot - only done masterfully and consistently by him. Look at how he twists his racket to get that cross-drop. Well done, legend!
Now, trick shots are all fun and games.
But it’s precisely the wrong thing to focus on if you want to transition from a beginner to an intermediate level.
If you’re at that level, and feel stuck - what you really need to do is focus on the fundamentals. That’s why I’ve created the Badminton Secrets program.
In that program, I share everything I’ve learned in the last 18 years of playing badminton. So you can become a better badminton player faster and with less effort.
