At least 11 people died and an estimated 1,000 more were left with breathing difficulties and other health problems after synthetic gas leaked from a factory in southern India on May 7, 2020. A second release of toxic gas happened again the following morning from the LG Chem plant in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh, triggering a wider evacuation. The South Korean company which operates the plant in Visakhapatnam city said it is investigating the cause of the incidents, which reportedly happened as the facility was restarting operations after India’s weeks-long coronavirus lockdown.
