Dying cooked pasta noodles is easy peasy.
All you need is:
• Gel food colouring (I use Americolor)
• A Ziplock bag
• Cooked noodles
• Parchment paper and a baking sheet or somewhere to lay the noodles out that you don't mind might get stained.
• A strainer
Instructions:
If the noodles have been in the fridge overnight just wet them again so they aren't so dry and tacky. Add them to a ziplock bag. Drop in a few drops of food colouring and shake shake shake! Mush it around. You'll be able to see it distributing so you should know what areas need a bit more attention. If you have an older child they can do the shaking part and be a part of the process.
Next just dump out the noodles on the parchment paper, spread them out as much as you can and let them sit for 10-20 minutes and soak up the colour. (One day I plan to test if you can just leave them in the bag for this time, I don't see why not but I haven't tried that way yet!)
Lastly dump the noodles in to the strainer and rinse them well. And you're they're ready to play with.
Additional Ideas/Tips:
• If you have an older child who is using, or learning to use scissors spaghetti noodles make for a great alternative to cutting paper.
• We have been part of play groups where these noodles have been prepared the day before stored in an airtight container and brought out to the park for a large group of kids of all ages to enjoy and it was probably the biggest sensory bin hit!
• If the noodles start to get to tacky and don't feel as nice as slippery just add a bit of water to lose the tackiness.
• I always keep my dog away from all sensory bins and activities that involve food, but especially painted or dyed food as I'm guessing he's better off without it in his belly.
• We have noticed that blue is the colour that seems to come off on your hands the most, but in general we never had any staining that doesn't wash away with soap and water (and we've done black noodles for Halloween!)
• Last tip; gel food colouring can be replaced for liquid but you need to add vinegar or rubbing alcohol to set the colour, and I would say to keep it taste safe vinegar is the best choice!
