Facial Recognition Technology allows us to open our smartphones without entering a passcode, can identify missing persons, or generate leads in a criminal justice investigation. However, evidence shows that the artificial intelligence computer programs (algorithms) have varying degrees of accuracy depending upon the group. Consistent with psychological studies that show individuals have difficulty recognizing faces of members of an outside group, the facial recognition systems are 10 - 100 times more likely to generate a false positive match (incorrectly identifying an uninvolved person with a person of interest) of minority individuals.
Ethical Dilemma in Science:
Should the use of Facial Recognition Technology be limited until:
The computer algorithms “learn” to be more accurate with faces from diverse populations?
And/or
Society establishes guidelines and laws to guarantee the civil rights and fairness to those identified, and accountability by those using the technology?
What are the limits to the use of the data collected in facial recognition?
- should it be used for training artificial intelligence to be more accurate?
- should it be use to provide more data for identification?
Who has access to the “data” of face collection?
- Risk of data breach
- Sharing between companies or government agencies
