Arteriovenous fistula is an unnatural connection between an artery and a vein. Usually blood flows from your arteries to your capillaries and then to your veins, but in this condition blood flows directly from an artery to a vein. Tiny arteriovenous fistulas do not portray any symptoms and usually do not require treatment. Some symptoms of large arteriovenous fistulas include purplish bulging veins, swelling in the arms and legs and decrease in blood pressure. If an arteriovenous fistula requires treatment, the doctor will suggest ultrasound guided compression or catheter embolisation. A large arteriovenous fistula will require surgery and the type of surgery depends on the size and location of the fistula.
